Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μέτοικος.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μέτοικος ( > post-classical Latin metoecus , metycus (late 3rd or early 4th cent.)) < μετα- meta- prefix (denoting change) + -οικος (frequently in nominal and adjectival compounds; < οἶκος house: see oecist n.). Compare earlier French métèque (1743 as mestèque ) in sense 1, and extended uses from late 19th cent.
Ancient History.
1. A resident alien in a Greek city, having some of the privileges of citizenship.
