Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps transmission error for viretote n., or perhaps shortened < merry-totter n. (although this is first attested slightly later) and in quot. c1430 substituted scribally for the unfamiliar word viritoot . With form mery trotte compare forms s.v. merry-totter n., and perhaps compare trot n.¹ N.E.D. (1906) labels this word as spurious and cites it as: ‘occurring as a corrupt reading in Chaucer, and hence in Blount and later dictionaries’.

Obsolete.
