Etymology: < meta- prefix + -chromasia comb. form, after German Metachromasie (H. Hoyer 1890, in Arch. f. mikrosk. Anat. 36 310). Compare French métachromasie (1897 or earlier), and slightly later metachromasy n. Compare Byzantine Greek μεταχρωννύναι to colour (in the Suda).

Histology and Biology.

The property exhibited by certain biological materials and structures of staining a different colour from that of the stain used; the changed colour produced by this property. Also: the corresponding property of certain cationic stains of changing colour (exhibiting a shift in absorption spectrum towards shorter wavelengths) in the presence of biological substrates with appropriate anionic groups.
