Post-classical Latin metabola and metabole are attested from the 5th or 6th cent. in senses relating to medicine (in translations of Greek medical writers), music, and rhetoric, but the Greek word is found already in classical Latin authors (e.g. in Quintilian with reference to rhetoric and music).
