Etymology: < post-classical Latin merganser (C. Gesner Hist. Animalium (1555) III. 129) < either classical Latin mergus any of several diving seabirds, or the apparently related mergere to plunge (see merge v.) + ānser goose (see anserine adj.). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (məɹgæ·nsəɹ) /mɜːˈɡænsə(r)/.

Any of a group of large Holarctic diving ducks of the genus Mergus, having a long, narrow, serrated bill hooked at the tip. Cf. sawbill n. a.common, hooded, red-breasted, white merganser, etc.: see the first element.
