Compare French †Messalian (1608 or earlier). Some of the β. forms are probably due to association with the place name classical Latin Massilia , ancient Greek Μασσαλία (see Marseilles n., and compare Massilian n. and adj.); compare:1885 Encycl. Brit. XVIII. 472/2 A similar scheme was adopted by Cassian of Marseilles (hence Semi-pelagians are often spoken of as Massilians).
