单词 messalian
释义

Messaliann.adj.

Brit. /mɛˈseɪlɪən/, /məˈsɛɪlɪən/, U.S. /məˈsɛɪliən/
Forms:

α. 1500s Messalyan, 1500s– Messalian, 1700s Messallian.

β. 1500s–1600s 1800s– Massilian, 1700s– Massalian Brit. /ˌmaˈseɪlɪən/, U.S. /mæˈseɪliən/.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Messalianus, Massalianus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Messalianus (a1564 in Calvin), Massalianus (mid 6th cent.), respectively < Byzantine Greek Μεσσαλιανός (5th cent. in Theodoret) and Μασσαλιανός (4th cent. in Epiphanius) < Syriac meṣalyånå given to prayer (compare Byzantine Greek εὐχίτης , lit. ‘member of the praying sect’ (5th cent. in Theodoret: see Euchite n.), εὐχόμενος , lit. ‘one who prays’ (4th cent. in Epiphanius), both used to denote Messalians). Compare French †Messalian (1608 or earlier). Some of the β. forms are probably due to association with the place name classical Latin Massilia , ancient Greek Μασσαλία (see Marseilles n., and compare Massilian n. and adj.); compare:1885 Encycl. Brit. XVIII. 472/2 A similar scheme was adopted by Cassian of Marseilles (hence Semi-pelagians are often spoken of as Massilians). Compare slightly earlier Messalonian (see quot. 1555 at sense A.α. ).
