Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian mezza.
Etymology: < Italian mezza, feminine form corresponding to mezzo (see mezzo adv.). The compound mezza cadenza is < Italian mezza cadenza (17th cent.); it is uncertain whether other compounds found in English represent borrowings < Italian, or formations within English (or other languages). With mezza orchestra compare French mezza orchestra (1842). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (me·dză) /ˈmɛdzə/.
Music.
Half, medium, moderate. In various compounds, designating the manner in which a note, passage, etc., is to be played, as mezza-bravura, mezza-manica, mezza orchestra, mezza tirata, etc. (chiefly adjectives and adverbs). See also mezza voce n.

1876 J. Stainer & W. A. Barrett Dict. Musical Terms 292/1 Mezza manica, half shift [in violin-playing]; mezza orchestra, with half the orchestra.
1984 New Grove Dict. Music XII. 258/2 In current Italian, mezza manica means the half position in string playing, mezza cadenza a half-cadence.
