Etymology: < Mercator, Latinized form (see marketor n. 1) of the name of Gerard de Cremer (or Kremer: see cramer n.) (1512–94), Flemish mathematician, geographer, and cartographer, who devised the projection.

2. Mercator's projection n. (also Mercator projection) an orthomorphic cylindrical map projection (first used by Mercator in 1568) in which the meridians are equally spaced straight lines at right angles to the equator, and the parallels of latitude are horizontal lines whose distance from each other increases with their distance from the equator.Maps based on the Mercator projection are widely used in navigation because any course that follows a constant compass bearing is represented by a straight line.
