Etymology: < Middle Dutch meercat, meercatte (Dutch meerkat ; compare meerkat n.), cognate with Middle Low German merkatte , Old High German merikazza , merkazza (Middle High German merekatze , merkatze , German Meerkatze ), apparently < meer (see mere n.¹) + catte (see cat n.¹).Perhaps originally an alteration of an Asian name (compare Sanskrit markaṭa ape) by assimilation to words meaning ‘sea’ and ‘cat’, with the notion of ‘ape from overseas’.
