Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch meercat.
Etymology: < Middle Dutch meercat, meercatte (Dutch meerkat ; compare meerkat n.), cognate with Middle Low German merkatte , Old High German merikazza , merkazza (Middle High German merekatze , merkatze , German Meerkatze ), apparently < meer (see mere n.1) + catte (see cat n.1).Perhaps originally an alteration of an Asian name (compare Sanskrit markaṭa ape) by assimilation to words meaning ‘sea’ and ‘cat’, with the notion of ‘ape from overseas’.
Obsolete.
