Etymology: < scientific Latin Mesotrocha, former genus name (J. Müller 1846, in Archiv f. Anatomie, Physiologie u. wissenschaftliche Medicin 2 104) < meso- meso- comb. form + ancient Greek τροχός wheel, disc (see trocho- comb. form) + -a -a suffix². N.E.D. (1906) gives only the stress (mesǫ·trŏkă) /mɛˈsɒtrəkə/.

With plural agreement. The ciliated larvae (collectively) of certain polychaete worms, characterized by one or more rows of cilia encircling the middle of the body.

1877 T. H. Huxley Man. Anat. Invertebrated Animals v. 243 These larvae are called Telotrocha. In other cases, one or many bands of cilia surround the middle of the body, between the mouth and the hinder extremity. These are Mesotrocha.

1888 G. Rolleston & W. H. Jackson Forms Animal Life (ed. 2) 606 The terms alluded to are as follows:..Mesotrochae with one or two median bands but devoid of the two telotrochous bands (the Chaetopteridae alone).

1997 Bull. Marine Sci. 60 396 Somewhat more than half the samples (51%) contain planktonic polychaete larvae, specifically the nectochaetes of the Spionid, Scolelepis eltaninae Blake 1983 or the mesotrocha of the chaetopterid Phyllochaetopterus monroi Hartman 1967.
