单词 mesolithic
释义

Mesolithicadj.n.

Brit. /ˌmɛsə(ʊ)ˈlɪθɪk/, U.S. /ˈˌmɛzoʊˈlɪθɪk/; see also meso- comb. form.
Forms: also with lower-case initial.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: meso- comb. form, -lithic comb. form.
Etymology: < meso- comb. form + -lithic comb. form, after Neolithic adj. and Palaeolithic adj.
A. adj.
1. Archaeology. Designating, belonging to, or characteristic of the part of the Stone Age intermediate between the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods. The duration of the Mesolithic period varied in different parts of the world; in Europe, it occurred between the end of the last glacial period (c8000 b.c.) and the beginning of Neolithic agriculture. As originally conceived, the defining characteristic of the Mesolithic period was the abundant occurrence of microliths; it is now recognized that microliths first came into use in the later Palaeolithic period, and that some Mesolithic industries lacked them.
