1976 Audubon Sept. 47/2 Among the octocorals are the soft corals, usually fungus-shaped or branched into stout lobes and with the lower part of the polyps fused into a fleshy mass. Best known of the octocorals are the gorgonians.
1988 Zool. Jrnl. Linn. Soc. 92 25 C[apnella] thyrsoidea (Verrill, 1865) is a well-known and common constituent of the regional octocoral fauna.
1995 New Scientist 18 Feb. 39/2 John Costlow and colleagues isolated several substances with antifouling properties from octocorals—so named because they are covered in sprays of eight tentacles.
