Forms: Middle English–1500s bak-, bac-, backward(e, Middle English bakeword, 1500s bacewarde, (Scottish bakwart), 1500s–1600s backeward, 1500s– backward.
Etymology: originally aphetic form of abackward adv.; but subsequently referred directly to back n.1: see -ward suffix. Primarily abackward differed < aback, in expressing direction rather than completed motion; and this still to some extent distinguishes backward < back.
