(the language of coinage of which is uncertain: see discussion at that entry); compare also metrometer n.1 and metrostyle n.

Etymology: < ancient Greek μήτρα womb (cognate with μήτηρ mother n.1), probably via post-classical Latin metro- or French métro- (see metrorrhagia n.). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (mitro) /miːˈtrəʊ/ to the first element of words formed using this combining form.
