Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek μητρεγχύτης (Galen) < ancient Greek μήτρα womb (see metro- comb. form³) + ἐν in (see en- prefix¹) + χύτης pourer (recorded in an undated glossary; < χυ- , zero-grade of χεῖν to pour (see yet v.) + -της, suffix forming agent nouns), after ἐγχεῖν to pour in. Compare French †métrenchyte (18th cent.).R. G. Mayne Expos. Lexicon Med. Sci. (1860) gives the Latin forms metrenchyta, metrenchytes.
