单词 mesne
释义

mesneadv.adj.n.

Brit. /miːn/, U.S. /min/
Forms: Middle English–1600s measne, Middle English– mesne, late Middle English meosne, 1500s–1700s mesn, 1600s–1700s measn.
Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from Law French. Probably partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Law French mesne; French mesne, mene.
Etymology: Probably < Law French mesne (adjective and noun) and its etymon Anglo-Norman mesne, variant of mene (see mean adj.2 and mean n.3), although in Middle English apparently identified with senses of mean adj.2, mean n.3, and mean adv.1 and probably apprehended simply as variants of those words. Middle Eng. Dict. (s.vv. mēne adv., mēn(e-tīme n. and adv., mēne n. (3)) takes the Middle English examples below to be variants of mean adj.2, mean n.3, and mean adv.1, and suggests that at least the noun uses (see sense C. 1) may arise within English from metathesis of originally plural forms (see frequent use in plural form with singular sense and vice versa at mean n.3).
Law in later use.
A. adv.
At an intervening time (between two other times). Cf. mean adv.1 2. Obsolete.
