Origin: Probably from a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: proper name Menaccan , Manaccan , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: Probably via German Menakanit (W. Gregor 1791, in Chem. Ann. 1 40) < Menaccan, variant of the place name Manaccan, Cornwall, the type locality + -ite suffix1. Gregor (a Cornish mineralogist and chemist) coined the name, but no English use by him is recorded; compare also French menakanite (W. Gregor 1791, in Observ. sur la physique 39 160).
Mineralogy.
A mineral now recognized as a ferrian variety of ilmenite.
