Etymology: < German Mesitin (A. Breithaupt 1847, in Ann. der Physik 70 147) < Hellenistic Greek μεσίτης go-between (see mesite n.) + German -in -ine suffix⁵.In fuller form mesitine-spar after Breithaupt's earlier synonymous coinage Mesitinspath (1827 in Jrnl. f. die Chem. u. Physik 50 317: see spath n.), so called ‘because its rhombohedron is intermediate in angle between magnesite and siderite’ (A. H. Chester Dict. Names Minerals (1896) at cited word). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (me·sitīn) /ˈmɛsɪtiːn/.
