Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Occitan. Etymons: French mesclun; Occitan mesclum.
Etymology: < French mesclun (mid 19th cent.; also in form mesclum ) and its etymon Occitan mesclum, mesclun mixture, salad of mixed leaves < Old Occitan mesclar to mix (see meddle v.).
Young leaves and shoots of a variety of wild plants, used to make a salad.
