Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mes.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman mes (in phrases a mes within range, a dreit mes accurately, with sure aim) and Old French mes throw, shot (12th cent.; apparently not attested in Middle French) < classical Latin missus shooting of missiles, distance traversed by a missile, lit. sending (see mess n.1).
Obsolete.
A stroke, a blow. to mark (a person) with a mes: (figurative) to strike with a calamity or affliction. at good mes: in good range or position for a shot.
