Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin mersion-, mersio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin mersion-, mersio immersion, especially in baptism (c500) < classical Latin mers- , past participial stem of mergere (see merge v.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare earlier immersion n. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mə̄·ɹʃən) /ˈmɜːʃən/.
Obsolete.
Immersion, esp. baptismal immersion. Also (in quot. 1817): a merger or fusion.
