Etymology: Humorous alteration of ass-backwards adv. (although this is first attested later). Compare later bass-ackward adv. With use as adjective compare slightly earlier bass-ackward adj.
North American slang (humorous and euphemistic).

Backwards, back to front, the wrong way round; in a manner contrary to what is usual, expected, or logical; = ass-backwards adv.In quot. 1884 in the context of breech delivery.
