Origin: Probably a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin memorandus, memorāre, memorandum.
Etymology: Probably < classical Latin memorandus memorable, use as adjective of the gerundive of memorāre (see memorate v.). Sense B. 2 is probably independently < post-classical Latin memorandum memorandum n. Compare Anglo-Norman memorande memorandum (late 14th cent.).Some 16th-cent. examples, such as the following, may in fact represent memorandum int., with the point representing a mark of suspension:1597 Reg. Salehurst Parish Church 18 Apr. in C. J. Dawson Hist. Hastings Castle (1909) II. 405 Memorand. that the dutyes for Churchinge of women..is vnto the minister jxd ob. and vnto the Clarke ijd.
