Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: Greek Μῆλος , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek Μῆλος ( > classical Latin Mēlos ), the name of the most south-easterly island of the Cyclades in the Aegean + -ian suffix, after ancient Greek Μήλιος, noun and adjective (compare classical Latin Mēlius ). Compare Middle French Melien (1545 in the passage translated in quot. 1550 at sense A.).Melian earth in quot. 1968 at sense B. is after Hellenistic Greek γῆ Μηλία a greyish aluminous earth used in antiquity in the manufacture of paint (compare meline n.). Compare French terre mélienne (1611).
