Etymology: < ancient Greek μεγαλοπόλις great city (also Μεγαλοπόλις, the name of a large city in Arcadia in the Greek Peloponnese) < μεγαλο- megalo- comb. form + πόλις -polis comb. form. Compare earlier megapolis n.Earlier in English with capital initial as the name of the Greek city:1579 T. North tr. Plutarch Liues 397 Cleomenes kinge of Lacedæmon, came one night vpon the sodaine, and gaue an assault to the city of Megalipolis [sic].1633 E. Grimeston tr. Polybius Hist. II. 97 After the taking of Megalopolis..Cleomenes drew his Army together, as soone as the opportunity of the time would give him leaue. Megalopolis was founded by Epaminondas of Thebes in 371–368 b.c. as the seat of the Arcadian league. It was built on a grandiose scale, with walls 9 km in circumference, and populated by the wholesale transfer of inhabitants from 40 local villages. The normal English plural (after metropolis n.) is megalopolises, but irregular formations (such as megalopoli, megalopolii, megalopoloi) sometimes occur.
A very large or principal city, a metropolis (occasionally as a proper name); (now sometimes) spec. a continuous urban sprawl formed from the expansion of adjoining cities. Also: the way of life characteristic of such a city. Occasionally: the practice of building large cities. Cf. megapolis n.
