Etymology: < post-classical Latin medicaster (c1525) < classical Latin medicus medic n.1 + -aster -aster suffix. Compare Italian medicastro (1534), French médicastre (1800; compare Middle French medicastrie charlatanism (1560)), German Medikaster (1675 or earlier).
Now literary.
A person who pretends to medical skill; a quack, a charlatan.
