Stress is often attracted to this combining form, e.g. midi-length Brit. /ˈmɪdɪlɛŋ(k)θ/, U.S. /ˈmɪdiˌlɛŋθ/.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mid adj., middle adj., -i- connective.
Etymology: < either mid adj. or mid- (in middle adj.) + -i- connective, after maxi- comb. form and mini- comb. form.Apparently earliest in midiskirt , and subsequently in a small number of formations from the late 1960s onwards. Compare midi adj. and n.2
Forming names of things of an intermediate length or size; also midi-length, midi-size. Cf. midi adj.
