单词 | mcleod gauge |
释义 | McLeod gaugen. A type of mercury-in-glass manometer for the absolute measurement of low pressures, in which a known volume of the gas to be measured is compressed by the mercury into a small volume, and the resulting pressure is found from the height of the column of mercury it supports. ΚΠ 1880 J. E. H. Gordon Physical Treat. Electr. & Magn. II. xxxv. 83 The apparatus is in connection with a McLeod gauge, by means of which pressures to 0·00005 millim. can be determined. 1923 Proc. Cambr. Philos. Soc. 21 505 The residual pressure of the gas in the box was measured by a Macleod gauge. 1945 Electronic Engin. 17 325/1 M. Francis—dealing mainly with the sorption effects of the walls—gives a detailed account of the use of the McLeod gauge with non-permanent gases. 1971 Sci. Amer. Aug. 114/2 Although the McLeod gauge indicates absolute pressure and is universally used for calibrating other instruments, it is inconvenient to operate. 1989 R. Dryer & G. Lata Exper. Biochem. i. ix. 210 The McLeod gauge is an application of the Gay-Lussac law, which states that: PV = nRT.
