Legislation sponsored by McKinley and enacted in 1890, creating a tariff which imposed high duties on many imports to the United States; the tariff itself.The legislation was passed principally as a protectionist measure to foster the development of U.S. industries. As well as the imposition of high duties, the legislation also made provision for reciprocal tariff treaties to secure markets for U.S. products abroad.
