Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Fluorescin.
Etymology: < German Fluorescin (A. Baeyer 1871, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 4 558) < fluoresc- (in Fluorescenz fluorescence n., fluoresciren fluoresce v.) + -in -in suffix1 (compare discussion at -ein suffix). Use in sense 2 was probably facilitated by the variant pronunciation of fluorescein n. with monosyllabic suffix.
Chemistry.
1. A compound formed by the reduction of fluorescein.Fluorescin differs from fluorescein in having an oxygen atom replaced by a hydroxyl group, OH, and a carbon atom replaced by a CH group. Formula: C20H14O5.
