Etymology: < German Fluorescin (A. Baeyer 1871, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 4 558) < fluoresc- (in Fluorescenz fluorescence n., fluoresciren fluoresce v.) + -in -in suffix¹ (compare discussion at -ein suffix). Use in sense 2 was probably facilitated by the variant pronunciation of fluorescein n. with monosyllabic suffix.
