Etymology: < post-classical Latin mediastinum (1363 in Chauliac; compare quot. ?a1425 at main sense), neuter of mediastinus middle, medial, intermediate (6th cent.), use as adjective of classical Latin mediastīnus mediastine n.2 (for the unusual semantic development see discussion at that entry). Compare mediastine n.1
Anatomy.
A septum or partition between two body cavities or two parts of an organ; esp. that dividing the thorax, separating the right and left pleural cavities and containing the heart, trachea, oesophagus, thymus, etc.anterior, middle, posterior, superior mediastinum: see the first element.
