Etymology: < red adj. + bill n.2 With sense 2 compare red-beak n. at red adj. and n. Compounds 1f(b)(ii). Compare earlier red-billed adj.
1. Chiefly Australian and New Zealand. Any of several birds having a red bill; spec. (a) an oystercatcher (genus Haematopus); (b) the purple swamphen, Porphyrio porphyrio; (c) the red-browed waxbill, Aegintha temporalis, which has a red stripe running from the bill and over the eye (obsolete).
