Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Arabic. Etymons: Urdu mazār; Arabic mazār.
Etymology: < Urdu mazār and its etymon (probably via Persian) Arabic mazār, lit. ‘place which one visits’ < zāra to visit.
In Muslim countries: a tomb, esp. one revered as a shrine; any place of religious pilgrimage.
