Etymology: < French ballistospore (H. G. Derx, at the suggestion of M. A. Donk, 1948, in Bull. Bot. Gardens, Buitenzorg 17 468) < post-classical Latin ballisticus ballistic adj. + French -o- -o- connective + spore spore n. The spore is so called on account of its forcible ejection on maturity.
