Origin: Probably from a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Maxim , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: Probably < the name of Hudson Maxim (1853–1927), U.S. inventor of this and other explosives (and brother of Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim: see Maxim n.4) + -ite suffix1.The word is attested slightly earlier in French in 1895 in P. Guérin Dictionnaire des dictionnaires (Suppl.), where the invention is attributed to Hudson Maxim, as also in quots. 1901 and 1989. However, quot. 1897 is from a report on a case brought by Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim's Maxim-Nordenfelt Co., and compare also quot. 1915.
Now historical.
A high explosive consisting chiefly of picric acid, used to detonate shells and torpedoes.
