Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French méloplaste.
Etymology: Apparently < French méloplaste (although only documented from 1824; see note below) < mélo- melo- comb. form + plaste -plast comb. form.P. Galin describes the meloplast method in his Exposition d'une nouvelle méthode pour l'enseignement de la musique (1818) but does not appear to use the term méloplaste in this work. The posthumous edition of 1824 (Galin died in 1822) is entitled Méthode du méloplaste pour l'enseignement de la musique.

1822 Ann. Reg. 1820 (Otridge ed.) ii. Sci. 1365/2 M. Galin..has lately introduced a new instrument for teaching music, called the meloplast. M. Galin's ingenious method consists in making his pupils sing from a stave, without either clefs or notes, according to the movements of a portable rod.
1980 New Grove Dict. Music VII. 100/1 Pupils are introduced to staff notation by means of the ‘méloplaste’, a vacant staff on which notes and intervals are pointed out with a baton.
