Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin potamogeton, potamogītōn.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin potamogeton, variant (e.g. in 16th-cent. editions of Pliny) of classical Latin potamogītōn (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ποταμογείτων pondweed < ancient Greek ποταμός river (see potamic adj.) + γείτων neighbour (see geitonogamy n.). Compare French potamogéton (1559 in Middle French as potamogeton).Compare the following earlier use of the post-classical Latin word in an English context:1548 W. Turner Names of Herbes sig. F.v Potamogeton is called in duche Samkraute, it maye be named in englishe Pondplantayne, or swymmynge plantayne, because it swymmeth aboue pondes and standyng waters.

Originally: any of several kinds of aquatic plant (not identified). Later: spec. ( Potamogeton) a cosmopolitan genus of aquatic plants with submerged and sometimes floating leaves (family Potamogetonaceae); (also potamogeton) any of various plants of this genus; a pondweed.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) 126, after earlier use by Tournefort (1700).
