Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ēducātor.
Etymology: < classical Latin ēducātor person who nurtures or brings up (children), especially a foster-father < ēducāt- , past participial stem of ēducāre educate v. + -or -or suffix. Compare Middle French educateur, French éducateur (1527; rare before first half of the 19th cent.), Italian educatore (1575), both in sense ‘person who educates’.
1. A person or animal that rears offspring with respect to physical needs. See educate v. 1b. Obsolete.In quot. 1566: the female breast as a source of nourishment.
