Etymology: < Mauritius, the name of the island in the Indian Ocean where the lichen is found, Latin form of Dutch Maurits Maurice, name of the Count of Nassau (1567–1625) and Stadtholder of the United Provinces of the Netherlands + weed n.¹Mauritius was named by the Dutch, who took possession of the island in 1598.

Now rare. Perhaps Obsolete.

The lichen Roccella fuciformis, from which an inferior dye has sometimes been obtained. Cf. orchil n.
