单词 mauritanian
释义

Mauritanianadj.n.

Brit. /ˌmɒrᵻˈteɪnɪən/, /ˌmɔːrᵻˈteɪnɪən/, U.S. /ˌmɔrəˈteɪniən/
Forms: 1500s– Mauritanian, 1800s– Mauretanian (in senses A. 1, B. 1).
Origin: From proper names, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Maurētānia , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Maurētānia, Maurītānia ( < Maurētānus Mauritan n. and adj. + -ia -ia suffix1) + -an suffix. The earlier form in Latin appears to be Maurētānia ; the form Maurītānia is perhaps after place names derived from ethnonyms in -ītānus -itan suffix, e.g. Lūsītānia. Mauritania occurs as a place name in English contexts from Old English onwards. Old English Mauritaniæ, Mauritanie Mauretanians, occurs as an ethnonym in the Old English translation of Orosius Hist. (rendering Latin Mauri).
