单词 maundering
释义

maunderingn.

Brit. /ˈmɔːnd(ə)rɪŋ/, U.S. /ˈmɔnd(ə)rɪŋ/, /ˈmɑnd(ə)rɪŋ/
Forms: 1600s maundring, 1700s– maundering.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: maunder v.2, -ing suffix1.
Etymology: Apparently < maunder v.2 (although this is first attested slightly later) + -ing suffix1.The compound maundering broth (also broach , breath ) is recorded in various 18th-cent. cant dictionaries with the gloss ‘scolding’ (earliest in B. E. New Dict. Canting Crew (1699), latest in Tom & Jerry Flash Dict. (c1825)); analysis of the compound is opaque, but sense 1 is perhaps the likeliest interpretation of its first element.
