A person (originally in a royal or noble house) responsible for arranging or supervising ceremonies, esp. a person responsible for the arrangement, etc., of guests at a banquet or other formal occasion (formerly often †marshal of the hall). Also figurative. archaic.In the English royal household the Marshal of the ceremonies was an official of the Lord Chamberlain's department, ranking below the Master of the ceremonies.
