Etymology: < motor n. + cycle n.1 Compare slightly earlier French motocycle (1891) and motor bicycle n.
1. A two-wheeled motor-driven road vehicle, resembling a bicycle but powered by an internal combustion engine; (now) spec. one with an engine capacity, top speed, or weight greater than that of a moped.In the U.K. Road Traffic Act 1988 c. 52, § 185(1), the term is applied to mechanically propelled vehicles, other than invalid carriages, weighing not more than 410 kg (approx. 900 lb) and with less than four wheels. The machine is typically ridden by a single rider, but some models accommodate a pillion passenger or sidecar.
