Etymology: < marsh n.1 + marigold n.With forms in march- (see e.g. quot. 1657) compare march , regional variant of marsh n.1, although influence of March n.2 is also possible.
Any plant of the genus Caltha (family Ranunculaceae), which comprises marsh plants of the north and south temperate zones having showy cup-shaped flowers with petaloid perianth-segments; esp. C. palustris, of Eurasia and North America, which bears bright yellow flowers in spring and early summer (also called in Britain kingcup, in the United States cowslip).
