Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch bakfiets.

Etymology: < Dutch bakfiets (1919) < bak kind of open box or container (see back n.²) + fiets bicycle (c1870), of uncertain origin, perhaps < a regional (southern Limburg) verb vietse to run fast, perhaps ultimately < French vite fast (see petite vitesse n.).On the etymology of Dutch fiets see E. Sanders Fiets! De geschiedenis van een vulgair jongenswoord (1997).

Originally in the Netherlands: a type of bicycle or tricycle with a large open or enclosed box mounted low behind the front wheel and in front of the rider, originally used by tradespeople to carry cargo, but now used (esp. by parents) to travel with small children.
