Etymology: < German Melanchlor (J. N. Fuchs 1839, in Jrnl. f. prakt. Chem. 17 173) < ancient Greek or Hellenistic Greek μελάγχλωρος dark olive-coloured (readings in Hippocrates and Aristotle are disputed) < ancient Greek μελαν- (see melano- comb. form) + χλωρός green (see chloro- comb. form¹).

Mineralogy. Now historical.

A blackish-green hydrous phosphate of iron, probably heterosite or a mixture of heterosite and dufrenite.
