Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mélanagogue.
Etymology: < French mélanagogue purge for melancholy (1669; 1561 in Middle French as adjective, capable of expelling black bile) < ancient Greek μελαν- (see melano- comb. form) + ἀγωγός leading, drawing (see agogic adj.1). Compare post-classical Latin melanagogus (1608 in the passage translated in quot. 1657 at melanagogal adj.); also melagogus (adjective), melagogum (noun; both a1250 in a British source).
Medicine. Obsolete.
A medicine supposed to expel black bile, one of the four cardinal humours.
