单词 marquisotte
释义

marquisottev.

Forms: 1500s marcussotte, 1500s marquesotte, 1500s marquezate, 1500s marquisado, 1500s marquisotte, 1500s marquizotte, 1600s merquizotte.
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; clearly related to Middle French barbe faite à la marquizotte , glossed by Cotgrave (1611) as: ‘[beard] cut after the Turkish fashion, all being shauen away but the mustachoes’, although this is not attested elsewhere and the direction of borrowing is therefore unclear. Perhaps compare also Spanish a la marquesota designating styles of dress (mid 16th cent.), and Catalan marquesota denoting a ruff or starched collar (early 16th cent.). Presumably ultimately a compound of a cognate of marquis n.1, with an uncertain suffix (perhaps compare Spanish -ote , augmentative suffix). With the form Marquisadod in quot. 1592 compare -ado suffix. Compare also:1587 W. Harrison Hist. Descr. Iland Brit. (new ed.) ii. vii. 172/1 in Holinshed's Chron. (new ed.) I Neither will I meddle with our varietie of beards, of which some are shauen from the chin like those of the Turks, not a few cut short like to the beard of marques Otto, some made round like a rubbing brush, other with a pique de vant. (O fine fashion!).
Obsolete.
transitive. To shave or trim (the beard) with exaggerated fastidiousness. Occasionally in passive, of a person: to have the beard so trimmed.
