Etymology: Origin uncertain; clearly related to Middle French barbe faite à la marquizotte , glossed by Cotgrave (1611) as: ‘[beard] cut after the Turkish fashion, all being shauen away but the mustachoes’, although this is not attested elsewhere and the direction of borrowing is therefore unclear. Perhaps compare also Spanish a la marquesota designating styles of dress (mid 16th cent.), and Catalan marquesota denoting a ruff or starched collar (early 16th cent.). Presumably ultimately a compound of a cognate of marquis n.¹, with an uncertain suffix (perhaps compare Spanish -ote , augmentative suffix).
