Etymology: < Middle French, French maroquin (1479 in phrase peaulx de maroquins morocco leather; 1552 as marroquin sheepskin or calfskin treated like morocco leather; a1585 as adjective ‘made of morocco leather’; 1630 as adjective (perhaps as independent formation) in general sense ‘Moroccan’), probably < Spanish marroquín (although only recorded from 16th cent.) < the name of Morocco n. + -ín -ine suffix¹. Compare marocain n. and Moroccan adj. and n.Compare post-classical Latin marocum maroquin, morocco leather (1372 in a British source).
