Etymology: < classical Latin Marōnēus, adjective ( < Marōnēa (also Marōnīa ) < ancient Greek Μαρώνεια , the name of a town in Thrace) + -an suffix: see -ean suffix, -ian suffix.The place is called Ismarus by Homer; it was renamed Μαρώνεια < the name of Μάρων , priest of Apollo, who gave wine to Odysseus (Homer Odyssey 9. 197) + -εια -y suffix³.
